Best Thrift Store

Thrift Town

Thrift Town is not a shop for the weak-willed or the time-strapped. Unlike some other Mission District "thrift" stores, its selection has not been pre-edited by hipsters. For some this is a deterrent, as it requires more digging. To the pure of heart the store presents a welcome challenge, and the rewards are so much sweeter. Gorgeous, mint-condition Gunne Sax hippie dresses and perfect Pucci-esque shifts can be found for under $10. The costume jewelry counter stretches forever, and the outerwear selection leaves no faux-fur peacoat or fringed leather jacket behind. On the modern tip, Michael Stars T's come and go for less than $3. Thrift Town has hundreds of shoes, including '70s knee-highs and '80s ankle boots. Its housewares department, located on the second floor, can be tough if you have a specific object in mind. But wander around and see if the perfect velvet armchair, '60s globe on a wooden floor stand, or gloriously tacky landscape painting doesn't jump right out at you. If you do have time to spare, check out what rewarding weirdness turns up in the large used-book section.
