Best New Bike Lane

Polk Street Bike Lane

Polk St.
This is the most hyped bike lane installed anywhere in San Francisco last year. Billed by the San Francisco Bike Coalition as “the North-South route in San Francisco for people on bikes,” Polk Street has been notoriously dangerous for cyclists. The broad green “contra-flow” protected cycle track now runs from Market to Grove Street, but that’s far from the extent of the Polk Street improvements. The SFMTA recently announced upgrades that include bike signals at Geary Boulevard, Ellis, Eddy, and Turk streets, and will have metered lights so there are fewer right-hook crashes, where a driver turns right without looking for bikes going straight. This configuration is rare in San Francisco, and the protected Cargo Way bike lane in Bayview is the only place you’ll find it.
