Thorough Bread and Pastry

Everything at the two-month-old Thorough Bread is so pretty it hurts. And, happily, its baked goods taste as good as they look, to coin a phrase. The place is affiliated with the San Francisco Baking Institute ( Thorough offers more than a dozen different breakfast pastries in addition to prizeworthy croissants, brioche, scones, and muffins. Homey cookies include peanut butter, oatmeal raisin, and the rarely seen cinnamon-dusted snickerdoodle. Hand-shaped breads are baked fresh daily in a hearth oven and are used in the lunch menu of sandwiches and salads, as well as a savory bread pudding with bacon and Parmesan. The real jewels are the cakes and pastries: éclairs stuffed with diplomat cream (a blend of custard and whipped cream), caramel napoleons, and a dazzling salted caramel chocolate tart.
