Best Menus

Trick Dog

When hip Mission bar Trick Dog opened in January 2013, San Francisco design enthusiasts fell over themselves in delight over the cool laminated menus based on the Pantone color guide. It featured drinks based on particularly inspiring color names like Polar Bear (mezcal, sweet vermouth, and crème de menthe) and Pennies From Heaven (rye, amaro, sour apple liqueur, sherry, and housemade bitters). Seven months after the color-swatch menu lit up the blogosphere, the gang surprised everyone by debuting a completely different, but equally cool menu designed like an old-fashioned record album. You had to flip through actual records to find drinks based on song names like "Mr. Big Stuff" (tequila, Gran Classico, coconut, bay laurel tincture, and lime) and "Louie Louie" (bourbon, Campari, and fresh pineapple). Earlier this year, the team rolled out its newest menu iteration, this time based on an astrology chart with drinks named after all 12 signs of the Zodiac (our favorite is the Taurus, with gin, Dolin blanc, carrot, miso, and coriander). And as you've probably figured out from the ingredient lists, Trick Dog's cocktails are as unusual and creative as the menus that describe them.
