Best Gay Archive

James C. Hormel Gay & Lesbian Center

Named for the Hormel meat-packing heir who donated $500,000 to help establish the center when the new main branch of the San Francisco Public Library was built, the archive, on the building's third floor, is widely regarded as among the best of its kind in the nation. Its archives and exhibits include art, culture, history, literature, and political activism related to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender life. Besides books, periodicals, and archival collections, the center sponsors changing exhibitions and public programs. It's also the repository for the papers of the late San Francisco supervisor Harvey Milk and journalist Randy Shilts, among others.
