Best Coffee

Martha & Brothers Coffee Co.

Those who mourn the demise of old San Francisco often blame chains like Starbucks as the harbingers of the new era. But chains aren't all bad. After all, Martha Guerrero Monroy started her own mini-coffee empire in a Noe Valley storefront nearly 15 years ago, expanding it since then to five locations run by her brothers and sisters throughout the city. Importing coffee from around the globe, Martha & Brothers roasts beans daily at a SOMA warehouse. The beans -- everything from a straight, no chaser French Roast to Jamaican Blue Mountain -- are great to bring home, but the real deal here comes in a hot cup. Martha's daily brew is rich, thick, earthy, and strong enough to merit checking your health insurance for ulcer coverage. It's good. It's damn good. If there were a Martha & Brothers on every corner, Starbucks wouldn't stand a chance.
