Liverpool Lil's

The burger at Liverpool Lil's is a big, old-fashioned beauty. Its eight ounces of Angus beef is hand-formed into a thick patty, the kind Dad grilled in the backyard in 1950s sitcoms. It comes topped with your choice of cheese (swiss, provolone, cheddar, blue, and mozzarella), and grilled onions; there's a schmear of mayonnaise on the fat, sesame-seeded bun, and on the side comes lettuce, tomato, and a haystack of thin, crisp fries, some with bits of potato skin left on. (And all for a reasonable $10.95, at brunch, lunch, and dinner — until the late-for-S.F. hour of 1 a.m. Tuesday through Saturday, and 11 p.m. Sunday and Monday.) As well as your choice of cheese, you get a choice of venue: Enjoy your burger in Liverpool Lil's dark, comfy pub interior where the walls are encrusted with interesting, framed detritus accumulated over its 34-year existence. Or, on nice days, perch outside at one of Lil's patio tables, taking in the fresh air and the lovely view that encompasses both the Presidio across the street and the Palace of Fine Arts down the hill.
