Best Bar That's Been a Bar Since Before 1915

The Uptown

When longtime owner and resident grump Scott Ellsworth passed away last year, it seemed like the Uptown might bite the dust. (The nearby Elbo Room is a dead man walking.) But the dive bar that's been serving beer and bourbon since whatever preceded it burned down after the 1906 quake isn't going anywhere, now that a consortium of bartenders and regulars took it over. The Uptown is still full of great bad art and incorrigible bohemians, drinking the day away and refusing unsolicited opinions on how the joint might be improved. May this consummate dive live on and be nasty as hell, forever.
