Bear in Heaven: Show Preview

Wednesday, Apr 4 2012

Brooklyn trio Bear in Heaven exists in a cul-de-sac where krautrock, shoegaze, electro-pop, and cosmic disco govern the neighborhood association; when this band holds a block party, it's a welcoming pocket of resolute percussion and hazy melodies. The group's new full-length, I Love You, It's Cool is a more social, almost anthemic experience, compared to the inward-looking drone of previous release Beast Rest Fourth Mouth. There's a tribal insistence to I Love You's 10 tracks, most of which feel like elongated crescendos, and seemingly every tone is treated with some sort of reverberant effect. Somehow, though, the cascading arrangements don't leech the band's momentum. Steady rhythms and woozy dynamics have long made for good companions.

The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
