Basement Jaxx
The Cow Palace
Basement Jaxx's colorful live renditions, delivered with complete abandon, should make up for the fact the act can't tour with all 14 guest vocalists when it comes to town as part of Live 105's Subsonic Spookfest on Friday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m., $30-$40; www.live105.com.
Ten years down the line, dance-pop duo Basement Jaxx writes its own ticket in choosing collaborators. Its fifth album, Scars, features such marquee names as Santogold, Kelis, Sam Sparro, and Yoko Ono. The pair's patented jangly, unrestrained house music suits the disparate styles of its guest vocalists, allowing Scars to morph among twisted R&B, superclub floor-fillers, moody dub, and frantic disco. While this might sound too scattered to work, once you get over the odd speedbumps, the album makes itself worth your while.
