Recordings of the Grey Daturas show off the majestic noise-metal drone the Melbourne band is famous for. But the trio is an improvisational instrumental group, meaning that from a purist's perspective, recordings are a moot point and a pale snapshot of the genuine article, at best. In the flesh, the Earth-inspired Daturas interact with the audience and with each other to sling low, rumbling cauldrons of bass under skittering drums and space-traveling guitar work. Spontaneous combustion like this can't be repeated, and why should it be? Still, record stores report that CDs – like the new Dead in the Woods re-issue -- sell out quickly. Fans of Sunn O))) won't be out of their comfort zone here; neither will adventurous Comets on Fire devotees.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
