Army: Show Preview

Wednesday, Dec 22 2010

Fritzmaurice Williams' stage name, Army, is a reference to the time he spent in the U.S. military after graduating from New York's School of the Performing Arts. Following his service, he traded his M-16 rifle for a reggae career that's produced five albums since 2000. Like those of fellow Virgin Islanders Midnite, Dezarie, and Bambu Station, his career has grown through constant touring and polishing his gentle, soulful compositions. His background in gospel and jazz bands seeps through songs like "Jah Reveal It," which he sings with buttery Nat King Cole–influenced vocals. For his S.F. appearance, Army will be joined by another conscious Virgin Islands singer, Danny I, whose songs discuss redemption over weighty tropical rhythms.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
