And Then Came the Next Idea

With the Six-Word Memoir publishing juggernaut, Larry Smith of Smith Magazine discovered a lot of stories need only six words. Here’s ours: “Who’s farting in the God-damned elevator?” Smith also found out other stories require more words -- sometimes dozens, sometimes hundreds more. And drawings, a list or two, e-mails, even tweets. These he’s captured in his latest book, The Moment: Wild, Poignant, Life-Changing Stories from 125 Writers and Artists Famous & Obscure, which was published in January. We all have our moments, when you get bad news from the doctor or good news from the circus, when your teacher praised your attendance but not your science-fair volcano, when the envelope from the college is thick but the one from Granta is nowhere to be seen. With Jennifer Egan, Dave Eggers, Elizabeth Gilbert, Gregory Maguire, and Tao Lin among them, the writers in Moment are of a particularly stellar caliber, armed with capital-M moments they’ve undoubtedly plumbed for years. We’d include ours here, but we’d need a glue stick and some pipecleaners.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
