Niyaz
The Palace of Fine Arts
Niyaz unspools trance-inducing, cinematic tunes from its recent two-disc release, Nine Heavens, on Friday, Feb. 13, at 8 p.m., $27-$53; 567-6642 or www.palaceoffinearts.org.
Traditional sounds from the Middle East and India have long been alluring sample fodder for electronic artists, but few modern acts can boast the kind of cultural pedigree held by Niyaz. Iranian vocalist Azam Ali and her multi-instrumentalist husband Loga Ramin Torkian explored Persian classical music in past projects — she in voice-and-percussion duo Vas, he as leader of the band Axiom of Choice. Partnered with noted producer and engineer Carmen Rizzo (Paul Oakenfold, Seal, Coldplay) in Niyaz, they interweave ancient Persian folk songs and Sufi poetry with hypnotic beats worthy of Massive Attack.
