Allien Invasion

The concept-driven queen of mnml — the bastard genre of Detroit techno, European microhouse, New York's avant-garde, and oven-baked tranquilizers — Berlin's Ellen Allien came up in the warehouse party scene. Now with 15 years as a DJ and latest album Sool to her credit, Allien can spend equal time exploring dazed recesses as arterial immediacy. In contrast, her mischievous countrymen and co-headliners Modeselektor have embraced the gargling riddims of fidget-guided beats and electro-furrowed bass, irrigated by sprouting melodies.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday.
