All Over Juice Boxes

Paul Madonna is known for drawings of the city and sometimes maddening text. His new venture concerns toys from his childhood and sometimes maddening text. What’s the connection … with the art? We don’t know. Both are irresistible, and that’s progression enough for us. The new exhibit, “In What Era Will You Get Stuck?,” appears alongside a book of art, but don’t call it a catalog: Madonna comes from zine culture, and the exhibit exists mostly to christen the premiere issue of his new publication, Album. He’s going to do one issue a year, and for someone used to newspaper deadlines for his All Over Coffee strip, that sort of lead time must be liberating. Perhaps that’s why he’s drawing toys.
