Aesop Rock: Show Preview

Wednesday, Jun 8 2011

San Francisco-based rapper Aesop Rock has a well-earned reputation as a studious rap practitioner. His releases on El-P's famed indie label, Definitive Jux, were verbose affairs that excelled at pairing gloomy imagery with somber beats. His latest project, Are You Gonna Eat That?, was created in association with Rob Sonic and DJ Wiz, and is credited to the group Hail Mary Mallon. The album doesn't exactly lighten Aesop's image, but it does usher in quirkier topics with ditties about fast food and the rigors of engaging in a staring contest. The beats, as ever, are designed to appeal more to the cerebellum than the nether parts.
