What do we do with the soundtrack to a book? If we were an august reviewer like Harold Bloom, we’d open the book, put the CD on the coffee table, and put a cup of coffee on the CD. Like book trailers and Snooki, the book soundtrack seems to be another publishing tool to flip Edmund Wilson over in his grave, but there is a bright spot: writer Glen Duncan and the band the Real Tuesday Weld, in particular founder Stephen Coates. In 2003, Duncan and Coates created, respectively, the book and album I, Lucifer, about the Prince of Darkness (aka “Best Fuck in the Seen and Unseen Universe”), who lived in contemporary London and had a great deal of “Best Fuck” sex. The former got good reviews and became a bestseller; Pitchfork gave the latter a 7.8. The collaborators return this year with The Last Werewolf, the printed version of which has already received the best reviewer line of the year, courtesy of the London Guardian: “The Last Werewolf is like an updated version of Dracula, only for werewolves, and as rewritten by Bret Easton Ellis.” This is followed shortly thereafter with “Let’s see how much sex and violence you can take.” Awroooo … ? Tonight’s event distills the book soundtrack trend into its most elemental form, with Duncan reading over music by Coates. Go for either performer, or go for the package, but if you figure out the correct etiquette for books with soundtracks — do you consume them separately or concurrently?
