We'll Always Have "Paris by Night"

Like the birthplaces of most empires, the houses on this street aren't much to look at: single-story, suburban starter homes with gray stucco, peeling door trims, and oil-stained, two-car driveways. A cherub-faced 29-year-old named Quang Le enters one of these…

Owl and the Sparrow tracks a week in the separate lives of three young Vietnamese

The humanistic ensemble drama has gotten such a bad name in recent years, thanks to ponderous high-profile entries like Crash and Babel, that a barebones plot description of Owl and the Sparrow might convince you that you've seen this movie…

    Two Blocks of Vietnam

It's clear that Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn left something out when he said that art and literature are the only spiritual ambassadors between countries. If you attend the Church of Cuisine, my house of worship, eating the food of another country is…

    Don't Go Away!

Fans of the HBO series Entourage might recognize Saigon, the rapper who was managed by the erstwhile Turtle (Jerry Ferrara) over the course of two seasons. But what many don't know is that Saigon (aka Brian Carenard) is an actual…

The heart of the Tenderloin may not be as touristed a locale as espresso-scented North Beach or the alleyways of Chinatown, but since the fall of Saigon three decades ago, this bedraggled neighborhood has been the commercial and cultural…

    Best Street Food

The blithe, no-frills pleasure of scarfing a snack from a street-corner restaurateur is undeniable, but compared to what's available in Rome, Saigon, or Manhattan, our local opportunities for sidewalk noshing are severely limited. Fortunately, the Ferry Plaza Farmers' Market has…

    East Is East

When I was your basic bomb-beshadowed neurotic kid growing up in the stressful '60s, I couldn't decide which would be worse: being a girl and having babies, or being a guy and heading for Vietnam. The latter scenario seemed as…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
