    He and Him

The premise of Pichet Klunchun and Myself sounds kinda like a sitcom: Two strangers from disparate cultures, brought together by an unseen Fringe Festival curator, try to build a metaphorical bridge between themselves using dance. Unlike most situation comedies, this…

FRI-SAT 2/6-7 In the 60 years since he presented his first dance program with the late John Cage, Merce Cunningham has become the standard-bearer for the American modernist movement. He has famously valued chance and change in his work, and…

When I arrived in San Francisco light-years ago, Market Street was a sleepy boulevard dazed by bright light, occasional bursts of traffic, and packs of winos slumped in front of shuttered storefronts. People boasted about the two skyscrapers in town…

    Golden Era

Maverick choreographer Merce Cunningham doesn't create easily accessible dances. His pieces include few dramatic climaxes and no explicit meanings behind the movements, and often the music, set design, and choreography remain independent (rather than integrated) onstage. In these ways, he…

News Flash... American Indians treated fairly: Three cheers for the unexpectedly fair and well-done article by Bernice Yeung on the San Pablo Indian casino ("Gambling Their Future," June 6). I'm so used to the altleft's hypocrisy of championing Tibet independence…

    Beauty and the Beast

Ballet and intellectuality often seem to fit together about as well as George W. Bush and a good book. On the one hand, you've got ballet's anachronistic courtly pretension, with women in hooped gowns bowing beautifully, and men like so…

    Dancing Outside

It's 10 p.m. on a weekday morning and Anna Halprin is, as usual, in her favored state: nude. "I'm so sorry, I'll be right down," she shouts, full frontal, from the top of the stairs as she races around the…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
