"Lola Versus": Stoner Comedy Dares to Be Smart

Smart but spacey, naturally luminous and yet legitimately awkward, Greta Gerwig is perfectly cast in director Daryl Wein's romantic tailspin comedy as a manic mess whose coping mechanisms include juice cleansing one week, double-fisting 40s the next, and impulsively rebounding…

Remember the dance-punk explosion of this new millennium's early days? Punk rock riffs mixed nonchalantly with disco beats at sweaty shows nationwide where the kids actually danced? That trend's bubble may have burst, but bands like Moving Units certainly put…

    RadioActive

The last thing any self-respecting MC wants to be called is "organic," so we offer some harder-sounding lingo for RadioActive's long-awaited debut: "Organgsta rap," maybe, or "Glockoustic jazz." Nah, neither of those terms is playful enough to describe the veteran…

    The Be Good Tanyas

Folk music, perhaps more than any other genre, walks a fine line between the impishly clever and the cloyingly precious. On the first Be Good Tanyas album, 2001's Blue Horse, the Vancouver all-gal trio teetered over both sides of the…

    Phil Tagliere

Singer/songwriters may be overly sensitive, but that doesn't mean they shouldn't be confronted with the awful truth: that many of them -- from the lowliest dorm-room dreamer to the mighty Ani DiFranco -- offer overstylized anthems rife with tiresome self-reflection.…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
