    In Bloom

This year, the angle of the Pacific Orchid Exposition is that orchids, the flower of damp foreheads and silk sheets and chocolate cherries — fornication — actually clean the air, like little organic Hoovers. Sexy? Not so much. But very…

    Best Wine Bar

Best Wine Bar The Hayes and Vine is a great place to enjoy your very own casually empirical impromptu wine-tasting, especially after a long, hard day at the office. The cellar features upward of 1,200 wines, 40 or 50 of…

    Best Foodie Luxury

Best Foodie Luxury "Luxury" is the word for Aqua. The banquettes are plush, the enormous flower arrangements are exotic and overpowering, and caviar, lobster, and rare vintage wines are on offer. But still we were dazzled by the in-your-face extravagance…

    Best Bakery-Cafe

Best Bakery-Cafe We loved Tartine from the first moment we sank our teeth into the first thing we ordered there, now lost in the mists of time -- was it a croissant? A plain one, or one stuffed with fragrant…

    Best Pastries (Indoors)

We enjoy the cheesy lunch specialties served here immoderately (savory bread pudding, quiche, gougère, and the open-faced interpretations of croque monsieur), even though the strongest thing you can wash them down with is coffee (the food, as well as the…

Best Cocktail Lounge for Getting Frisky

Hard to say whether it's the mood lighting, the couches that encourage guests to settle in for another drink, or the young professional crowd that makes Le Colonial's French-Vietnamese lounge an excellent spot for flirtation. But whatever it is, it…

    Best Alcoholic Cream Soda

Vanilla beer? Strange, but true, and it's just one of the peculiarities of the Thirsty Bear, where seven tasty house microbrews are juxtaposed with a lengthy tapas menu in a brassy, industrial, South of Market setting. Even if the bartenders…

Best Place to Sip Wine Before Dinner

In a city that has thousands of excellent restaurants, one might wonder why anyone would choose to visit the Liberty Cafe, a restaurant that practically ensures a wait on weekend nights because it is limited to 12 tables and doesn't…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
