    Best Japanese

Kyo-Ya Palace Hotel, 2 New Montgomery (at Market), 546-5090, www.kyo-ya-restaurant.com The chic, minimal entry and bar of this Japanese restaurant are much more high-style than its rather ordinary, spare, and underdecorated rooms. But what comes out of the kitchen…

    Best Sandwich

Any midnight snacker will tell you that the act of creating a sandwich is a complex discipline requiring an innate sense of balance and a willingness to push the envelope. The fried oyster po' boy and the ahi and wasabi…

    Best Japanese Grocery

A few months ago we took it upon ourselves to cook up a six-course Japanese meal despite a collective lack of experience in sushi-rolling and tempura-frying and a cupboard bereft of harusame and shoga. Luckily, Super Mira (and its predecessor,…

    Best Oshinko

From what we've seen, there's always a line at this traditional, brightly lit sushi house, and from what we've tasted, the wait is justifiable. The tempura is so crisp it bristles like autumn leaves, the dragon sushi (a sort of…

    Best Bloody Mary

Best Sushi Restaurant to Which to Take a Microbiologist

Kitaro's well-rounded menu has all the traditional Japanese food offerings: bento boxes, udon, and donburi. But it's the sushi people line up for, especially on weekends. Kitaro, which has a distinctly Asian-pop culture feel to it, offers both traditional sushi…

    Best Sushi and Then Some

If you haven't been to Moki's, we strongly -- nay, vehemently -- urge you to get your ass to Bernal Heights tout de suite. A brilliant sashimi combination is surpassed only by even-more-brilliant specialty maki, or, for those who prefer…

    The World of Sushi

If you're a sushi novice, it helps to know that nigiri is a rectangular cake of sticky short-grain rice, dressed with rice vinegar, topped by a piece of whatever fish you've ordered; it may or may not be tied prettily…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
