    Blue Plate Special

No one sees San Francisco quite the same as Peter Plate. Over the course of two decades and more than a half-dozen novels, Plate has chronicled the city's seamier half with an eye for grimy detail and a voice reeking…

    Killing Joke

The noise-music nom d'étage of Switzerland-born, Berlin-based performer Joke Lanz, Sudden Infant combines playful absurdity with unnerving gibberish to create what he describes as "an exploding kaleidoscope, an acoustical Rorschach inkblot test." During his last San Francisco show at Art…

Sound System Gonna Bring Me Back Up

The Portuguese empire may be gone, but the cultural flow between Portugal and its former colonies never stopped. Witness the phenomenon of kuduro, a hybrid of lo-fi electronics, West African percussion, calypso rhythms, and hip-hop rhyming born in Angola and…

    Show and Attell

It’s been about five years now, but in the back of your brain’s attic — in the place where you store your haziest late-night memories — you must remember him. Perennially scruffy and unshaven, he would appear on Comedy Central…

    Cut It Out

"Self-esteem through self-mutilation" — that's how comedian George Carlin recommends body modification to the kids. You could cut his sarcasm with a guillotine, of course, but when an event skewers as many skins as Sigil, your confidence better be pretty…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
