    Sightings

Some tin-eared critics will write, "Hey dude, Sightings is the new noise." Do not believe this chicanery. Sightings is an extremely dissonant dance band. In fact, it is the first hybrid of Confusion Is Sex-era Sonic Youth white-noise and subatomically…

    Burmese

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (AP) -- Hip underground label Load Records has released the new offering by Bay Area heavies Burmese just in time for the mad holiday rush. This "22-minute peep show of infantile erotica," as one SF Weekly critic…

    Hear This

Like the hyperactive offspring of Sub Pop's Wolf Eyes, Oakland's quantum noise-engineers D Yellow Swans have released a heaping closetful of vinyl, cassettes, and CD-R's since their inception circa 2001. My latest acquisition from the duo is a self-titled CD-R…

    Sunburned Hand of the Man

    Metalux

Metalux is an eccentric female duo from Chicago that has developed this complex sound-machine. It's an intricate and cacophonous beast -- with an anatomy made of numerous retooled instruments, obsolete electronics, and frayed wires slithering all about -- that quite…

    Hair Police

Obedience Cuts smacks the nerves like a putrescent animal bleating its death wail, like end-of-the-line Rust Belt steel decay -- rows of oil-stained warehouses steadily collapsing in on themselves. But what feels particularly disturbing -- and breathtaking -- is the…

    The Skygreen Leopards|The Blithe Sons

San Francisco's Jewelled Antler collective is a loose assortment of prolific groups that set down their recorders whenever and wherever they damn well please (park, apartment, abandoned war bunker, beach, etc.), crafting mysteriously psychedelic free-folk that roams through the pines…

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
