Old Crow Medicine Show is not your average bluegrass band. While the high-lonesome vocals and fleet-fingered string-pickin' suggest a Southern-fried musical education, the players didn't meet in some backwater town in ol' Caroline but in New York. Not one of…

Morrissey fans know that, aside from James Dean and Oscar Wilde, pioneering '70s glam rockers the New York Dolls remain one of the most vital influences on the moody crooner's life, and he has thrown more light in their direction…

It makes sense that Now It's Overhead would choose a Magnetic Fields cover ("The Book of Love") to complement the single for "Wait in Line," from this year's Fall Back Open, a warm, texture-rich combination of sparse drum-machine beats, sparkling…

In our opinion, nothing spoils a pretty picnic like boring families satiating themselves with the contents of cute little picnic baskets, which is why we're thrilled that the third annual Noiserock Picnic will be bringing what the organizers call "bombastic…

How does an old-school avant-gardist who made his name with the legendary Sun Ra and Cecil Taylor connect with today's kids? He meets them on the dance floor. At least that's what trumpeter Eddie Gale, San Jose's officially designated "Ambassador…

You love natural disasters, admit it. If you could, you'd stand in the eye of a hurricane, a six-pack and a bong in hand. You'd walk on stilts along the San Andreas fault during an 8.6 quake. You'd fry wieners…

What happens when AC Newman, leader of Vancouver quirk-pop outfit the New Pornographers, makes a solo record? Well, it sounds like the New Pornographers, but without Neko Case or Daniel Bejar fucking it up by cluttering the amazing melodies. (No…

Yes, it was frustrating when we learned that KMFDM stood for "Kein Mitleid Für Die Mehrheit" (translation: "No Pity for the Majority") instead of "Kill Mother Fucking Depeche Mode," as the rumors had promised us for so long. It was…

You get the sense that Armistead Burwell Smith IV and Rob Crow, the co-conspirators behind Pinback, live in a house strewn with intelligent contraptions and futuristic doodads. Take, for example, the device that simultaneously wakes Pee-wee Herman up and cooks…

"Malkmus, Malkmus, Malkmus!" we might mutter in frustration like an indie-rocking Jan Brady or John Malkovich. We've seen the glory the former leader of Pavement is capable of and can't argue with the fact that he and his low-fidelity slacker…

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
