    Porn (The Men of)

Though the band got lumped in with the stoner-rock movement when it first emerged in the late '90s, the feedback-laden noise blasted out by Porn (The Men of) smacks of something far more extreme than crushers sucked from a 5-foot…

    Ludicra

Contrary to the average music fan's perception that black metal automatically equals singers who sound like they're gargling battery acid and relentless, guitar-in-a-Cuisinart riffs, the better bands of the genre actually employ a sonic palette considerably broader than most heavy…

There's something about Louis XIV that sends the hot-chick quotient skyrocketing whenever the band plays live. Maybe it's the shaggy haircuts and cocksure swagger. Maybe it's the tight, Stones-y garage rock. Or maybe it's the lyrics, which go a little…

Beards are threatening to replace Converse and square black glasses as the indie rock accessory du jour. You can thank Sam Beam, aka Iron & Wine, for that. Expect some newly-5-o'clock-shadowed hipsters to turn out when the bewhiskered Floridian songwriter…

Once upon a time -- Sept. 10 and 11, 1999, to be exact -- Minneapolis' Mark Mallman sat behind his electric piano and played a pop song for 26.2 hours straight alongside a 30-member rotating band. Sounds impressive, right? Well,…

    Helmet

With minimalist, staccato slabs of guitar, barked vocals, and a penchant for drop-D tuning, noise-rock juggernaut Helmet in many ways can take the blame for creating a template that countless nu-metal and modern hard-rock outfits have regurgitated ad nauseam over…

    Th' Losin Streaks

As easy as the three-chord proto-punk tunes found on Lenny Kaye's classic Nuggets compilation might be to play, too many garage revivalists confuse raw primitivism with outright sloppiness. Not so with the Sacramento-based thugs who make up Th' Losin Streaks,…

Iconoclastic local band Neurosis has built a feverishly loyal cult of fans with its lumbering mix of viscous down-tuned riffs, ambient electronic drones, tribal drumming, and strangulated vocals. But let's face it, ponderous 10-minute epics and extreme loud-versus-quiet dynamics aren't…
