Carnaval Delights

San Francisco's Carnaval honors South American culture and gives the spotlight to the many gorgeous colors and costumes worn by Brazil's indigenous people. If you're into partying and whooping it up in the streets, you're in luck. Speaking Brazilian Portuguese is not necessary, but wearing more interesting clothes than your usual hipster black shirt and denim skinny jeans is. Expect to sample wonderful food, see crafts and art, and enjoy activities at stages. And while there will be other Latin cultures present, and even Sheila E. as the grand marshal, make no mistake: This is a day for the yellow and green flag. Try a caipirinha (Brazilian rum with sugar and muddled lime), eat a delicious salgadinho (a salty tapa-style treat), or even have a bowl of heavenly moqueca capixaba (fish stew with garlic, cilantro, onion, and tomato), since all will be available.

The festival is 10 a.m.-6 p.m. through Sunday on Harrison Street between 16th and 24th streets, S.F.; Carnaval parade is Sunday at 9:30 a.m., beginning at Bryant and 24th streets, S.F. Free; carnavalsf.com.

  • clipping at Brava Theater Sept. 11
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
