If you can get past the portmanteau “staycation,” taking a mini-vacation in San Francisco can actually be pretty fun. We may silently chide tourists for congregating around Fisherman’s Wharf, buying last minute Alcatraz sweatshirts as the  fog rolls in, and blatantly saying “San Fran” without any hint of shame, but playing tourist in San Francisco can reveal a side of the city normally reserved for visitors. Below are some key places to stay if you’re looking for a getaway that requires neither a car nor a plane.

The San Francisco restaurant scene is changing faster than you can say “mouthfeel,” but that hasn’t hindered one of the greatest old-school restaurants in this city. Sears Fine Food, a local institution since 1938, sits smack in the heart of San Francisco’s tourist center with a menu unchanged since it came to the market. Let me explain why this Union Square restaurant is a must try for any tourist or townie.

Whatever plans you made for Bastille Day, break them, and don’t forget to check that your foot isn’t tripping the sensor as you lower the portcullis behind you. Hubert Keller, the acclaimed celebrity chef, James Beard Award-winner for Best Chef: California, and occasional party animal, is hosting a one-day, five-course pop-up at Gaspar Brasserie along with Executive Chef Chris Jones Tuesday, July 14.

Report From the Fancy McDonald's on Sutter

When the Business Times profiled the Union Square McDonald’s that people don’t always realize is a McDonald’s, I was intrigued. Seeing as we’re about to get that upscale Taco Bell that serves alcohol, it’s possible we’re in a true fancy fast food boomlet. This McDonald’s uses a Create Your Taste system to automate burger ordering, and there is no sign of Grimace or the Fry Kids, and no Playspace with a ball pit. I ate there, around 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. The fries and jalapeño burger were the first thing I consumed under the metaphorical Golden Arches in at least eight or 10 years, so any comparisons I might make date to “My Humps” and “Hollaback Girl.” But even by the standards of the hipster McDonald’s on 24th and Mission, seeing a big artwork that spells out “LOVE” was intense.

And they were playing James Taylor, the entire time.

I spent a fair amount of time ranting about the depressing ubiquity of the white-subway-tiles-and-Edison-bulbs aesthetic that makes two out of every three new places look like they’re violating the formula retail ban’s clause against uniformity of design. So let us now lavishly praise a beautiful bar that serves beautiful cocktails and beautiful bites: 398 Brasserie, at 398 Geary.

Gaspar Brasserie's Cognac Room Stocks More Brandy Than Anywhere in SF

Gaspar Brasserie is a swanky affair to begin with, but they’ve gone and added a gorgeous Cognac Room with lots of reds and earth tones to the postwar Parisian premises, as if to say, “Oh, you didn’t that would be all, did you? How charming.”

Union Square's BDK Is Not Just A "Hotel Restaurant"

  • Mini Truffle Butter Burger & "Saffron" at BDK

Apparently we’ve now entered the American Tavern-era of San Francisco dining. It sounds more like where George Washington and James Madison wined and dined and discussed the Constitution, but here in 2015 the idea just might be the next step beyond the now ubiquitous local, seasonal, organic, neighborhood bistro. What makes the month-and-a-half-old, self-described “American Tavern” BDK Restaurant any different than the aforementioned bistro concept escapes me, but hey, fun and worthwhile food are far more important than formal titles.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
