When the ancient Polynesians invented surfing, they often used a paddle to help them navigate. Fast-forward a few millennia, and Stand-Up Paddleboarding, or SUP, finds itself trendy again. Part of its increasing popularity is that standing upright allows surfers to spot waves more easily and thus catch more of them, multiplying the fun factor. Paddling back to the wave becomes less of a strain as well. The ability to cruise along on flat inland water, surveying the sights, is another advantage. Finally, its a good core workout. If youre sold on the idea, schedule an intro SUP lesson, free with board and paddle rental, and you may find yourself riding the waves like a Polynesian king.More
Many of us remember coming home from our elementary schools with freshly glazed pinchpots, cups, or whatever else our young imaginations could conjure up. Saturday mornings at the Randall Museum can bring that memory back, or create a new one for the youngsters. Ceramics make great gifts — especially on Mothers' and Fathers' Day. Hop on board for the Randall's once-weekly class, and for $6 and two weeks to have your work fired and glazed, you'll have all the materials you need.More
December is almost over - the New Year is coming up and everyone is busy drying off from the rain or holiday shopping. Let's take a look at what's happened this month.
In case you've been TaskRabbiting your way through life and haven't had the chance to leave the micro-loft to stroll the alleys and streets of central San Francisco, the number of homeless tent encampments in town is approaching epic levels — as in Hooverville and Great Depression levels.
The city's esteemed Dynamo Donut has teamed up with A.C.T. Theater to make the D'oh Nut, a Simpsons-themed doughnut in honor of the new show Mr. Burns, a post-electric play. It's a tasty replica of Homer's favorite treat: a zingy, light vanilla and orange zest cake with a tart raspberry Belgian-style beer glaze and rainbow sprinkles.
They will be sold during the play's run — Feb. 18 through March 15 — at Dynamo locations in the Mission and Marina Green as well as at A.C.T. Theater.

Are you craving holiday cookies but can't be bothered to make them, or even traipse to the store to buy them? There's never been a better time to be a lazy cookie-craver! Doughbies, a new dessert-based startup in San Francisco, promises to bring holiday cheer (in the form of cookies and the occasional Santa hat) to your door in less than 20 minutes. We put the service to the test.
A banana donut and a twice-baked caramel croissant.
As well as being home to Little Saigon, the area around Geary and Larkin is suddenly home to a few excellent bakery-cafes. Although Flour & Co., Libby Jane Café, and Jane on Larkin are all within a few blocks, there’s a new contender: Mr. Holmes Bakehouse.
If Hayes Valley is San Francisco’s most logical home for macarons, then the grittier end of SoMa ought to have its own signature confection as well. South of Market has so many disparate identities that it’s impossible to choose, but whatever it is, it’s probably at the new Chantal Guillon on Howard Street.

While the world may not need another dessert, I think we can all agree that some of the best things in life are not necessities.
Petit Pot falls into the latter category. Founded by Frenchmen Maxime Pouvreau, Petit Pot boasts gourmet puddings in glinting glass jars that are as portable as they are palatable.

Allstar Donuts is gone from the Marina after almost three decades of never closing, but mercifully, San Francisco endured the week with net gain/loss of zero doughnut shops. Just off busy, commuter-heavy 19th Ave., full of impatient drivers who could really use a coffee and a French cruller right about now, is Twister Donuts.
Papabubble's rainbow confections sometimes have messages inside.
If you haven't made it to Hayes Valley's newest candy store, Papabubble yet, you're missing out on a wondrous world of confections.
See, much like Willy Wonka's famous factory, the mini-chain makes its intricate candies in-store, and it is quite a production to behold if you're lucky enough to catch them mid-process (most afternoons).
Is there a void in your soul formerly filled by red velvet cupcakes or possibly pistachio macarons? Did you have a most trying day but already burnt through your allotted beer money? Are you trying desperately to differentiate yourself from the 143 other people who applied for the apartment you wanted by bringing the prospective landlords a little something special? If so, you have the answer to life’s little worries in Choux, the French cream puff bakery in the Lower Haight.
The Giant's Bonanza (chocolate frozen custard, Reese's peanut butter cup, Reese's Pieces, dark chocolate drizzle.)
Considering how much coffee there is in this city, there should always be room for more ice cream and related frozen treats. The Velvet Scoop, in the very center of the Mission, is a new “dessert restaurant” serving chocolate and vanilla frozen custard with a variety of toppings, nearly all of them known to the average six-year-old.

Chuck Siegel, the owner of Charles Chocolates, says he couldn't be more delighted with the neighborhood where his business recently opened. The retail space, café (coming soon), and kitchen, where customers can watch his pavé, bars, and pastries being made, have taken over the 7,600-square foot space on Florida and Mariposa that used to house the Potrero Brewing Company.
Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'.
Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
