Your New Bro, Spaghetti Bros.

Move over frat boys, there's a new bro in the Marina: Spaghetti Bros., to be precise.

This casual yet upscale Italian restaurant took over The Republic's spot on Scott Street back in late October, adding to the rich mosaic that is the Marina. It's a perfect example of Bay Area Italian dining, with a menu full of traditional recipes that have been given modern innovations.

The titular brothers have successfully transformed the space from the dingy, poorly laid out design of its predecessor to a chic destination. Were I not already committed, I would want to go here on a first date, since the atmosphere evokes an intimate feeling, with low lights and red candles that keep the mood explicitly Italian, while making it very challenging to take Instagrammable photos. Spaghetti Bros. also boasts an impressive cocktail selection, a must have for any respectable courtship in the age of Tinder dates.

Launching a new restaurant with multiple full menus can prove disastrous at the start, which is why some of our local eateries are adding entrees slowly. After opening the doors to dinner, some have given us weekend brunch to boot. Three spaces in particular are worth a weekend visit: ABV, Belga, and Calavera.

Where to Pick Up Sailors During Fleet Week

Ass, ahoy! The Blue Angels have arrived, giving us all a much-needed distraction from work as they loudly practice their swan dives above our fair city. In addition to being a good excuse to look out the window, these Navy planes also mark the influx of sailors, a military presence almost entirely extinct from our quasi-liberal haven.

I know I’m not just speaking for myself when I say I love a man in uniform, and Fleet Week brings prime pickings. If you’re like most Americans and harbor (pun absolutely intended) a secret Danielle Steele-level fantasy about a sailor taking his shore leave in your bedroom, then let me help guide you to the best places in San Francisco to get naughty-cal. Stick with this guide and I can almost guarantee you'll get seamen on your poop deck.

The Dorian Is Now Open in the Increasingly Cool Marina

“Martinis - Whiskey - Provisions” is how The Dorian, now open on Chestnut Street in the Marina, bills itself. (By advertising the first two, they’ve pretty much covered all the basics, if you ask us.) While it’s too focused on American whiskeys to be named exclusively for the ambiguous Oscar Wilde character who remained eternally youthful in spite of being morally corrupted, we are more than willing to corrupt ourselves throwing back fancy drinks over a dozen Miyagi oysters and beef tenderloin tartare.

Scotland Yard: Another Great Reason to Hit the Marina

Posted By on Wed, Sep 2, 2015 at 5:45 PM

SCOTLAND YARD
  • Scotland Yard

There is no shortage of places to drink in the Marina, and after my superlative experiences at Belga, I’ve vowed not to make any glib, easy jokes at their expense. In the case of Scotland Yard, though, any ribbing at all would be out of line.

Speaking as someone who wears a pink Hello Kitty backpack while pedaling to work every morning, I can say definitively that her popularity has never been higher. (I get a "Nice backpack, bro!" shouted at me from passing cars at least twice a week.) So we're delighted to learn that the Hello Kitty Cafe Truck is returning to San Francisco this weekend, as part of the J-POP Summit, and then to San Jose's Santana Row later in August.

Beery Cocktails and Charcuterie: Belga Rolls Out Brunch

Belga
, the mostly-but-not-entirely Belgian restaurant that I ate at twice this month and absolutely adored, is forging a path  into brunchy terrain. While the main dinner draw is its superlative beer selection, and brunch beer is still something of a taboo, there’s a lot to recommend here. High praise to any restaurant that places pork schnitzel with braised cabbage, spätzle, and eggs under the category “lighter side"!

Michael Mina’s newest space, Middle'terranea, has a “concoction” called the Ashraf which consists of Dolin Dry vermouth Kina l’Aero d’Or, apricot, lemon, lime, and Greek yogurt that is definitely one of the cleverest ways to work around a no-hard-alcohol liquor license restriction.

FRIDAY: Off the Grid's 5th Anniversary at Fort Mason

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2015 at 12:00 PM

OFF THE GRID
  • Off the Grid

Not everything makes it to its fifth anniversary. Neither the Carter Administration nor the Battlestar Galactica reboot did, and only two of Elizabeth Taylor’s eight marriages got much farther. So we announce with great fanfare that Off the Grid is about to celebrate its fifth anniversary tomorrow, Friday, June 26 (although the very first market was exactly five years ago today). Good job, y’all!

When the Fort Mason Center revealed that a new restaurant would be going in for the first time since the 1970s, there was an air of mystery about the entire thing. What’s going in there? Why did this take so long? Why was there a decades-long interval between Greens and, well, The Interval?

SF Weekly spoke with Nick Kinsey, Fort Mason Center’s Director of External Affairs, who is fully prepared to give up his smashing view of the Golden Gate Bridge so that restaurant patrons may one day have it.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
