We know you’re excited for Outside Lands next month. (Tame Impala! Hot Chip! Choco-Lands! Billy Freaking Idol! Elton Motherfucking John!) Insufferable fog notwithstanding, it’s probably our favorite weekend of the summer.

But this year, the three-day festival is pushing out its temporal with a series of Summer Pairings through the month of July, a sort of preview of the wines and noshes to come.

FRIDAY: Off the Grid's 5th Anniversary at Fort Mason

Posted By on Thu, Jun 25, 2015 at 12:00 PM

OFF THE GRID
  • Off the Grid

Not everything makes it to its fifth anniversary. Neither the Carter Administration nor the Battlestar Galactica reboot did, and only two of Elizabeth Taylor’s eight marriages got much farther. So we announce with great fanfare that Off the Grid is about to celebrate its fifth anniversary tomorrow, Friday, June 26 (although the very first market was exactly five years ago today). Good job, y’all!

As we approach the middle of Pride month, it’s always good to look past the rolling jubilee of parties and art openings to consider that even in the age of Truvada, HIV/AIDS remains a worldwide scourge that is inextricably linked with (but by no means limited to) the LGBT community.

Luminary chefs and winemakers gathered in Silicon Valley over the weekend, at the inaugural BITE Silicon Valley conference, giving attendees the opportunity to sample their best "bite" and sip. The 49ers might not have enough players to field a full team at their current retirement rate, but at least Levi’s Stadium saw some winning action over the weekend during the heart of the football off-season. The extravagant stadium in the Great America parking lot played home to the first edition of the BITE Silicon Valley festival, exploring the future of food (for “foodies and techies.” You get the picture).

Call it June Gloom, San Francisco Summer, or Thank-God-it’s-not-90-degrees-and-humid, but residents of the city are getting ready to usher in the official start of the summer season on the 21st by making sure all their sweaters, scarves, and jackets are cleaned and ready. Add having tiki cocktails to that list, because Blackbird Bar is hosting a tiki night this evening starting at 8 p.m. and going until close.

And sure, temperatures are getting pretty high today, but at least it's not humid!

This Weekend: Sunset Magazine's Final Celebration

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM

After 17 years, the sun has finally gone down on Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend. At least in its current incarnation. Last year, Sunset's parent company, Time Inc., sold the iconic ranch-style campus in Menlo Park which the magazine has called home since 1951 to a real estate investment company. This means Sunset is moving to offices in Oakland's Jack London Square, and that this weekend is the public’s last chance to enjoy the current campus’ gardens, test kitchen, and wine cellar under the banner of the annual event.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
