Sushi Ran's Chef Toshi talks Winning Third Place at the Global Sushi Challenge

San Francisco is a proud home to many world-renowned chefs, and now we can add Global Sushi Challenge 3rd place winner to that long list. Michelin-starred Chef Takatoshi Toshi of Sushi Ran in Sausalito recently brought home this accolade from Tokyo, after competing with top sushi chefs from around the globe.

Hosted by the Norwegian Seafood Council, the Global Sushi Challenge was the first of its kind, and aimed to showcase the immense talent of sushi chefs, and the breadth of the ingredients they use. Chef Toshi first qualified for the competition back in May after winning the chance to represent the entire United States, which is a pretty big win for our neck of the woods (take that, New York).

Once he returned from being a BAMF in Tokyo, Chef Toshi spoke with us about the competition and his approach when it comes to his craft.

I Entered Wing Wing's Hot Wing Competition and Survived To Blog About It

Last Saturday was Wing Wing's third Annual Wing Eating Competition held at the SOMA StrEat Food Park. There were two contests: 1) Who could eat the most "Angry Korean" Hot Wings in 10 minutes and 2) Who could eat 10 "Hella Hella" Hot Wings doused in a sauce of habanero, thai, scorpion, and ghost chilies — one of the hottest peppers in the world — the most quickly. I entered the latter.

Ah fall, the time of year where the nights get longer, pumpkin spice permeates the air, and you have a chance to eat as many chicken wings as humanly possible. That's right: It's time once again for Wing Wings' annual chicken wing eating contest, sponsored by the Lower Haight chicken purveyor and PBR. This year's festivities are going down on Saturday, Nov. 8 at SOMA StrEat Food Park.

Wow. In a raw, brutally honest talk at the MAD symposium in Copenhagen, Top Chef cheftestant and San Francisco chef Chris Cosentino opened up about the downsides to reality TV fame. He started doing the shows to get more exposure for his restaurants, provide more opportunities, and provide better for his family.

Student Throwdown! Culinary Clash hits Luce this Sunday

May the best student-chef bag fame and (scholarship) fortune! That's the premise of an upcoming Culinary Clash happening this weekend at the Michelin-starred Luce at the Intercontinental SF. Local culinary students The Art Institute of California - San Francisco (Ai), and the California Culinary Academy Le Cordon Bleu (CCA) will compete for a top prize in a series of Sunday dinners in collaboration with Chef Daniel Corey. Sunday's dinner is the creation of Maree Garcia, an Ai student: pan seared scallops with broccoli puree and vegetable salad; braised pork shoulder with chilies, poached egg and crispy Brussels sprouts; and a sweet ending of pear sorbet with lemon tuile.

Calling all home cooks! NBC is scouting for a new cooking show with the working title of Food Fighters. Many of the pertinent details are being kept under wraps. Casting Producer Erin Tomasello wouldn't fully dish on the reported "Big $$$$ prize" (for a dish of "bangin' BBQ", no less!) or if any celebs would be involved with this project just yet. Knowing this show is slated for primetime on a major network means that it could offer peeks of real home cooks strutting their culinary stuff, with some famous faces mixed in to keep things compelling.

Cost: Free

The rundown: The yearly Nog-In competition demonstrates that the best egg nog doesn't always have egg in it, nor does it have to have alcohol. All varieties with or without dairy or booze are welcomed in this friendly and casual competition, which is decided by public vote.

Kugel: Experience Many Varieties at Hanukkah Nosh-Down

Cost: $25 ($15 for children under 13); purchase in advance via Brown Paper Tickets

The rundown: A festive celebration of the first night of Hanukkah includes a menorah lighting ceremony as well as an opportunity to sample different takes on kugel to crown a kugel king or queen. (Well, not formal royalty, just the best of the bunch.)

Burrito Eater Will Soon Crown The Next Best Slab in San Francisco

Burrito Eater, a site billed as "San Francisco's top resource for taquerias and mustaches," hosts a biannual life threatening exercise called Slab Scrum to determine the city's best burrito. (If they did it every year, the site owner's life expectancy would probably be sadly short.)

This is always a fascinating competition to watch unfold on the site because the Burrito Eater is not biased toward the Mission more than it has to be. While it's the acknowledged ground zero for the burrito, other neighborhoods have managed to fare very well in this food-focused process. Just ask the Fulton Street location of Papalote, winner of the the 2010 title.

Attend a Pork Battle That Goes Whole Hog

Where: East Beach Picnic Area, Crissy Field, 603 Mason (at Halleck)

When: Sat., Sept. 15, 1-6 p.m.

Cost: $20 (purchase in advance via Eventbrite)

The rundown: Billed as "San Francisco's first whole hog BBQ competition," High on the Hog began four years ago as a private party for friends of East Coast transplants Mark Platosh, Bob Mayes, and Wyatt Nordstrom, who were disillusioned with fey California interpretations of hearty pork classics. The organizers now open the eating portion of the contest up to 200 members of the public with this BYOB event.

Three teams will take on three Balbas Farm hogs (75% Berkshire, 25% Duroc) that were raised on a diet of yams, squash, fruit, acorns, and walnuts. The chefs will explain to the crowd how they've prepared each one before serving them. Because they will utilize the entire animal, expect to learn about and appreciate a lot more than just bacon.
