Thursday Six: 20th Street Block Party Announces Its Food Lineup

Plus 1601 Bar & Kitchen throws a Sherry Pairing Dinner, Buffalo Theory hits Polk Street, the Girl Scouts of Northern California announce that they will sell S'mores in their 2017 lineup, and a nonexistent taco won an award.

What to Eat at the 20th Street Block Party
On Saturday, Aug. 20, from noon to 6 p.m., 20th Street between Harrison and Bryant streets will turn into a food and music festival for the fourth year in a row (and it's expanded to cover some of 19th Street as well). Noise Pop's 20th Street Block Party is one of the Mission's biggest outdoor events, and although there's no chef demo this year, admission is free (with a $95 VIP option) and the lineup looks pretty great, including musical acts like Boulevards, Hazel English, and Miami Horror, plus Mutiny Radio, the Rocket Dog Adoption Zoo, ArtSpan's Workshop Tent, Southern Exposure (SoEx) Interactive Installation. And of course, the food is astounding. Here's the full list of vendors:

Craft Beer and Filipino Food Destination Buffalo Theory Now Open on Polk

I've been, and it's great: Buffalo Theory (1735 Polk) is open, serving Tim Luym's largely Filipino-inspired food along a massive set of 30 craft beers curated by Ted Kim. Look for grilled BBQ oysters, head-on gambas al ajillo, a dish of sisig and grits, and "The Original" crispy adobo wings. And the name sounds like it came from the hipster business generator, but it actually comes from Cheers, when know-it-all mail carrier Cliff Clavin once said that, "A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest." He was comparing the process by which predators cull the weakest of their prey, eliminating them from the gene pool, to the method by which alcohol actually helps improve brain function by killing off your shoddier brain cells anyway I'm drunk right now and I want sisis and grits so bad you guys

1601 Bar & Kitchen Throws a Sherry Pairing Dinner
On Tuesday, Aug. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Brian Fernando, the chef-owner of San Francisco's only high-end Sri Lankan restaurant, 1601 Bar & Kitchen (1601 Howard), will put out a $75, five-course dinner (including a mulligatawny shellfish bisque with masoor dhal, turmeric, coconut sambol, and a toasted Pinkie’s baguette) with sherry pairings by Lustau Sherry's Lucia Ramos. Meanwhile, Oakland's Wizard Oil Company, which owns the bar Holy Mountain (680 Valencia), will have supplemental sherry-based cocktails.

Marin French Cheese's Annual Summer Picnic is Aug. 21
Hey artisan cheeseheads, you know you want to picnic in Petaluma at least once this summer. The Sunday after next, Marin French Cheese (7510 Pt. Reyes-Petaluma Blvd., Petaluma) will throw its fourth annual summer picnic, featuring 28 food and beverage vendors, like Emma's Jam, St. Benoit Creamery, Carneros Brewing Company, Silverado Vineyards, and Devil's Gulch Ranch. It's free for kids and only $12.50 for adults, which is a pretty solid steal for a Francophile food fest of this caliber.

The Girl Scouts Want to Sell You S'Mores
Yesterday was National S'Mores Day, another fake holiday that we would otherwise routinely ignore apart from the news that the Girl Scouts of Northern California will start selling a S'Mores-esque graham sandwich cookie with chocolate and marshmallow filling next year.

Bon Appetit Bestows "Best Taco" Title on Nonexistent Taco
And they messed with Texas, too. Bon Appetit awarded Dallas' Trompo the most highly coveted Best Taco nod for its al pastor taco, which local blog The Taco Trail noted is not something the Oak Cliff taqueria serves, causing Eater Dallas to pick it up. Even the most august of us make mistakes, and BA editor Julie Kramer quickly fixed it.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
