Wednesday Seven: Retrace the History of Coffee With Blue Bottle and Port of Mokha

Retracing the Historic Route of Coffee with Blue Bottle
Blue Bottle Coffee's James Freeman and Mokhtar Alkhanshali, founder of the social justice project Port of Mokha, will team up this Sunday, June 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Blue Bottle Palo Alto ( 456 University Ave.) to discuss the origins of the "Turkish wine." Retracing the Historic Route of Coffee will discuss coffee beans' origins in the now-beleaguered nation of Yemen, via Europe's first documented coffeehouse, Die Blaue Flasche (or The Blue Bottle). There will be coffee and Yemeni food.

B&B Kitchen & Wine Bar Now Open in Downtown Berkeley

Having nabbed Executive Chef Damien Jones (who's worked at Yoshi's the the Hotel Whitcomb in S.F., as well as Silverado Country Club and Bourbon & Beef), Abraham Masarweh and Julia Joslyn's B&B Kitchen & Wine Bar is serving grilled octopus, a coffee-braised beef short rib, and truffle mac 'n' cheese at 2116 Shattuck in Berkeley. With 40 seats inside plus an outdoor patio for 12, it's also conveniently right next to BART.

Perdition Smokehouse to Become Berkeley Social Club
Inside Scoop reports that after the sudden closure of Perdition Smokehouse, the space at 2050 University Avenue will become Berkeley Social Club sometime in August. Expect breakfast and lunch, a Korean-inflected dinner menu, and microbrewery beers flowing from about half of Perdition's 44 taps.

Jack's Oyster Bar Releases Rotating Friday Night Prix Fixe
Chef Rick Hackett of Jack's Oyster Bar & Fish House (336 Water, Oakland) has rolled out a family-style, Friday night menu that will change every two months. For $25 a person, you'll get a spiced wild salmon fish fry with kimchee cole slaw and fried fennel (June and July), a New England lobster bake with corn-on-the-cob and potatoes (August and September), and a Cajun Shrimp Boil with fennel and tomato sofrito plus summer squash (October and November.)

Gold Medal Flour Recalled for Possible E. Coli
Did you buy Gold Medal Flour between December and May? If so, dump it. General Mills is issuing a widespread recall, but does anyone really schlep flour back to the manufacturer? Mailing a large quantity of white powder to get your $4 back feels like a questionable risk-to-reward ratio.
