Tuesday Six: CUESA's December Pop-Up Farmers Market, A Wine Pyramid Scheme in Berkeley

Plus a mobile food incubator for food truck startups, a new coffee spot in the Castro, and a breakthrough enabling astronauts to go there and take their coffee to space.

Wildcraft Espresso Bar Opens in the Castro
The Castro coffee scene is fairly hyper-saturated, but hey, room for one more, right? Wildcraft Espresso Bar is now pulling Ritual shots on Market, Noe, and 16th streets. It's small, with shelves to lean on in lieu of tables, and since today is only Day Two, there aren't pastries yet, but there is a vintage rag-washing stand that looks like it was once used for holy water.

CUESA Mission Rock Farmers Market Pop-Up at the Yard: Holiday Edition
According to Socketsite, The Yard is getting a soccer field, but before that happens, there's the December go-round of its monthly farmers market pop-up. On Sunday, Dec. 20, some 25 local farms, restaurants, and foodie businesses will gather with pasture-raised beef bone broth, goat milk soaps, lacto-fermented sodas, and lots more. Bi-Rite's Shakirah Simley will use Old Dog Ranh walnuts and City Bees honey in a confection demo, and Lil Milkers Valley's Dawn Sternadel will show you the ins and outs of goat milk salve. Instrucktional, a Mobile Food Incubator
Google, Off the Grid, and OtG's subsidiary The Whole Cart have buddied up to create a 24-month incubator program on how to run a mobile food business. Just because you have the motivation to work 18 hours a day and lots of kitchen experience doesn't necessarily mean you know all about entrepreneurship, so Instrucktional will educate its participants in the ways of branding, financial planning, daily operations, and more. Enrolling two people per quarter until there are eight students overall, participants will graduate will total ownership of their businesses. Sound like a good fit? Apply!

A Wine Pyramid Scheme in Berkeley
Safeway might be on the hook for overcharging online customers, but here's an even more egregious incident. According to Inside Bay Area, Berkeley's Premier Cru was selling pricey wine futures up to two years in advance — largely to Chinese investors — and never delivering. It's the kind of thing that looks like isolated incidents of terrible customer service regarding foreign buyers until, hey, it's a multimillion pyramid scheme (Premier-amid scheme?).


Astronauts Can Have Coffee Now

Sipping in space is hard. Sipping hot liquids is harder. While astronauts have long had ice cream and Tang, coffee has heretofore eluded NASA, but according to Quartz, they can now use their zero-gravity espresso maker. Fluid dynamics is cool. 

The First Michelin Star for Ramen

According to Food and Wine, Tsuta, a "humble ramen shop" Tokyo, has become the first of its kind to win a Michelin star. I do smell a whiff of ethnocentrism in this belated achievement, but it's intermingled with the smell of tonkotsu broth.
