If you’re like me and often find yourself hankering for some late night food, but find the prospect of taking the last slim pickings from the shelf at 7-Eleven to be beyond depressing, then you might find yourself on a bar stool next to me at Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem.
Don’t let the verbose name intimidate you — it’s taken from The Muppets, which is hard not to love, even if Kermit and Miss Piggy have
called it quits on their 40-year relationship.
I’ll admit there are a reasonable number of restaurants in San Francisco that serve food late at night, but sometimes I feel like adding a cocktail to the mix, or even meeting up with a friend somewhere other than a diner booth.
Dr. Teeth balances out all these variables, offering an extensive food menu served until midnight, and a drink menu that will get you all the way to closing time at 2 a.m. During my most recent visit, I ordered tater tots and fried pickles (now in chip form), but Dr. Teeth also offers the whole gambit of traditional bar food. I’m especially fond of their $.25 Wing Wednesday deal, but happily spent quadruple that on at 11 p.m. on a Monday because those buffalo wings are so delicious. The kicker is that it’s good, fresh food, none of this straight-out-of-the-freezer-bull-honkey.
Their signature cocktail, The Mayhem, is a spicy-sweet concoction that pairs amazingly well with the wings, with one complementing the spiciness of the other. The Fernet doesn’t overpower the rest of the drink, leaving you with an herbal-orange-whiskey aftertaste. Whatever you order, your late night dining experience at this Mission bar will be satisfying and not to be soon forgetten, particularly since your lips will continue to tingle from all that spiciness for hours after you visit.
