This Weekend: Sunset Magazine's Final Celebration

Posted By on Fri, Jun 5, 2015 at 11:00 AM

After 17 years, the sun has finally gone down on Sunset Magazine’s Celebration Weekend. At least in its current incarnation. Last year, Sunset's parent company, Time Inc., sold the iconic ranch-style campus in Menlo Park which the magazine has called home since 1951 to a real estate investment company. This means Sunset is moving to offices in Oakland's Jack London Square, and that this weekend is the public’s last chance to enjoy the current campus’ gardens, test kitchen, and wine cellar under the banner of the annual event.

While the gardens, outdoor living demos, and home décor seminars are a draw for many, most people come for the chef demonstrations. This year, split between the two days, the event has brought in Martin Yan of M.Y. China, Chris Cosentino of Cockscomb, Yigit Pura of Tout Sweet, Liz Prueitt from Tartine Bakery, Joanne Weir of Copita, James Syhabout of Hawker Fare and Commis, and Craig Stoll and Anthony Strong from Delfina and Locanda. Additionally, SHED’s Gillian Helquist will give a fermentation seminar while Sunset’s food editor, Margo True, and associate food editor, Elaine Johnson, round out the kitchen stage appearances.

As in year’s past, several wineries and breweries will be on site pouring their goods. Beer will come from Tied House, Bear Republic, Sierra Nevada, Half Moon Bay Brewery, 21st Amendment, Devil’s Canyon, Anchor Brewing, Trumer Pils, Drake’s Brewing, Magnolia Brewing, Stone Brewing, and Firestone Walker. Sara Schneider, Sunset wine editor, will also be leading a beer and wine seminar with several winemakers and beer experts. On the food side, a dozen food trucks will be on site, including El Porteno, Bacon Bacon, Lobsta Truck, Hula Truck, The Waffle Roost, and Skylite Snowballs.

Tickets are $25 in advance, $35 at the door, with free admission for kids 12 and under. For those San Franciscans that are complaining about the lack of a real summer, this is a good opportunity to drive or train down to the Peninsula to experience warm weekend weather. As a bonus, on display this year as a featured exhibit will be a 400-square-foot mini cottage, which will make you weep as you think about how much you’re paying in rent for your studio apartment.

Sunset Magazine's Celebration Weekend, Saturday and Sunday, June 6-7, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., at Sunset Headquarters, 80 Willow Road, Menlo Park.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
