SoMa may not have a wild west, but it's western frontier has always been a little rougher. So here comes Forgery, a beer-wine-and-cocktail bar whose name suggests more than a whiff of criminality. Open Tuesday through Sunday for happy hour and wild nights, this spot is a leather-banquettes-and-mahogany-bar kind of place, but it’s not without a sense of humor. The beverage list (cleverly called “Forgery Originals”) includes more than a few intriguing cocktails, like the County Cork Shrub (Tullamore Dew, strawberry chamomile shrub, and tonic), the El Vampiro (Florencio Unico Mezcal, manzanilla sherry, crème de cassis and salt) and the punch-to-the-palate that is the Dr. Tequila (Partida Blanco tequila, Dr. Loosen Riesling, lemon, Laphroaig, and egg white).

That’s right, tequila and Scotch under a frothy egg white canopy. This bar is not messing around, and if you want further proof, there’s also something called a Pickled Swede (Absolut Elyx, dill-infused Dolin vermouth and an onion). Swedes are notoriously gloomy and lugubrious, but that sounds perversely good for combating SF’s summertime winter blues. Other drinks come on loan from friends of the bar, including a Tommy’s Margarita from Tommy’s Mexican Restaurant and a classic Pernod-lime-sugar-water absinthe preparation from Ibiza’s Charles Vexanat.

Forgery is a project of the PlumpJack Group, co-run by Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom’s sister Hilary. While they raise our hackles by referring to their bars by the bloodless term “properties,” among those properties are both Balboa Cafes and MatrixFillmore, as well as a number of other restaurants, hotels, and wineries in Napa and beyond. (Forgery is a beachhead for the team’s expansion south of California Street; PlumpJack is taking over what used to be the Lexington Club, too.)

It’s 2000 square feet of fun, and there will be bar snacks to go along with the aforementioned onion. Meanwhile, the club space next door (formerly Sloane) is going to become a venue in its own right, and it’s currently ready to be rented out, but plans for that adventure have yet to be finalized. Western SoMa just gets fancier and fancier.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
