Tequila and Cinco de Mayo go together like Simon and Garfunkel, or Hall and Oates, or Garfunkel and Oates, so it is no surprise that the west coast chapters of the United States Bartenders’ Guild have gotten together to host a tequila and mescal event tonight at Monarch. When you put together over two dozen bartenders from San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, Reno, Hawaii, Portland, and Seattle in SoMa’s Monarch, it’s a recipe for a good time.

Featuring a cocktail from each of the nine western chapters, the Agave Cocktail Showdown, showcases mezcals from El Silencio and Del Maguey and tequilas courtesy of Suerte, Gran Dovejo, Lunazul, Corralejo, Cazadores, Siete Leguas, and Herradura. Running from 7-10 p.m. with unlimited tastes of each cocktail, the $20 ticket price is a bargain and a perfect mid-evening Cinco stop. Plus, proceeds from ticket sales go to San Francisco’s own food incubator program, La Cocina, and the Tequila Interchange Project, which seeks to preserve sustainable and traditional practices in the agave industry. Who doesn’t like drinking for charity?

Attendees will also vote for their favorite agave cocktail, with the winner going home with the Showdown Trophy. A full list of bartenders in attendance and information on purchasing tickets are available here.

Agave Cocktail Showdown, Tuesday, May 5, 7-10 p.m., at Monarch, 101 Sixth St.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
