The Lexington Club Is Going Out With Two Bangs

Posted By on Tue, Apr 7, 2015 at 4:09 PM

When the news was announced last fall that the Lexington Club, S.F.’s only genuine lesbian bar, would be closing, the obits were written almost instantaneously. A bunch of other beloved spots (the Orbit Room, Empress of China, to name two) have shuttered in the interim, but after a six-month reprieve, it’s time for last call.

Two last calls, actually. We Belong: Lex Forever! Final Parties (Friday and Saturday, April 24-25) will be tearing it up over two nights of “celebration, mysticism, merrymaking and remembrance.” There will be go-go performers, DJs (among them Miss Pop of Club SomeThing and Durt from Ships in the Night), a commemorative designer giveaway by Tanya Wischerath on both nights, and probably a fair amount of valedictory alcohol. Noted one Facebook commenter, “I’ve rented a backup liver.”

As the founder of lesbian social networking site HER, Robyn Exton, told SF Weekly last month, the scene’s center of gravity has long since shifted away from bars and toward parties, and 19th Street has certainly changed a great deal in the 18 years that the Lex has been there. And while the bar will technically still be open through Thursday, April 30, you can join the girls for these two last hurrahs so you can say you were there when the Mission was still cool.

Here’s a news item that’s pretty much guaranteed to make your Canadian friend who thought she had a pretty good grasp of America blanch with disbelief. Hospitals across the country, including three in California, have fast-food establishments on the premises.

The always delightful upscale housewares shop Umami Mart began as a blog eight years ago, turned into a brick-and-mortar in 2012, and added a konbini (a Japanese convenience store) one year later. Now, co-owners Kayoko Akabori and Yoko Kumano have secured a beer-and-wine license to sell Japanese craft brews and sakes, and they’ve redesigned the store to make room for all the bottles.

To celebrate this long series of expansions and transformations, Umami Mart is having a party on April 21 from 6-9 p.m.

Eat Ramen, General Tso's Chicken and More, at the Food & Farm Film Fest

Still from "The Search for General Tso." - FOOD & FARM FILM FESTIVAL

Films about food are far too diverse ever to be considered a category. The sweetness and light of Babette’s Feast could not be more different from the vitriol of The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover, even when you factor out the fabulous Gaultier gloves that Helen Mirren wears.

So while there’s probably never going to be a People’s Choice Award for Best Sit-Down Dinner Scene, that doesn’t mean we can’t have a festival devoted to the pairing of food and film. And the third annual Food & Farm Film Fest, coming to the Roxie the weekend of April 17-19, is just that.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
