Occasionally you hear about lonely S.F. expats trying to recreate the most awesome burrito in the world — we've heard about purveyors as close as New York and as far as Singapore. Now
Capp Street Crap has a new interview with the owners of
La Monita, former S.F. residents who have opened a MIssion burrito purveyor (and food truck!) in Bangkok, Thailand.
The reasons behind the husband-and-wife team opening the taqueria are pretty standard: They missed Mission burritos and couldn't find decent Mexican in Thailand. What is interesting is how the cuisines overlap. Co-owner Kasama Laopanich told Capp Street that both cuisines use a lot of chilies, limes, garlic, onions, and cilantro. The differences come with the types of chilies, and dairy, which is expensive in Thailand. So they have to import cheese and other produce like avocados and Mexican herbs.
Still,
the menu of tortas, burritos, quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, and burritos looks pretty similar to something you might find in the Mission. And they're expanding the concept with a new California-Mexican restaurant next year. Considering the number of Cal-Mex spots that have opened here recently — La Urbana, Sabrosa, Lolo, Padrecito, HECHO, and more — they are perfectly on-trend even half a world away.
