Do you ever gaze at your local bartender as he peels some lemon zest on your cocktail and sigh as you think: I wish I knew your secrets? Luckily for San Francisco cocktail lovers, CUESA will host an event that brings will showcase great flavors and the science behind them.

After all, creating a great cocktail takes more than just putting together the right ingredients. At Chemistry of the Cocktail: Fall Cocktails of the Farmers Market, attendees can learn more about foam, infusions, fermentation, and more. In conjunction with the Exploratorium and the United States Bartender Guild, CUESA will host the event on November 12 at the Ferry Building Grand Hall.

While all this knowledge goes to your brain, you can also treat your palate to delicious drinks and food. Thirteen talented bartenders from the Bay Area — among them Alembic’s Larry Piaskowy, Rye’s Claire Jane Hunter, and Sidebar’s Jared Hirsch — will whip up cocktails using farmers market finds. Chefs like Larry Finn of Scala’s Bistro and Ronnie New of Comstock’s Saloon will also use these ingredients to give quick chemistry lessons while actually cooking up tasty bites. It’s like your elementary school science lesson disguised as a cool demonstration — except the adult version.

Names like Remy V, Ron Zacapa 23, and Jim Beam Single Barrel will also offer samples of their products. Naturally, the event is 21 and over, and it's an early one — over by 8 p.m. Plenty of time to get a drink after if you still want to visit that favorite bartender of yours.

Chemistry of the Cocktail: Fall Cocktails of the Farmers Market
When: Wednesday, Nov. 12, 5:30-8 p.m.
