Chef and cookbook author Cecilia Chang is one of the Bay Area's culinary legends, a woman who helmed her influential Chinatown restaurant The Mandarin for 30 years before selling it in 1991. She's often called the "matriarch of modern Chinese food" in this country, and filmmaker Wayne Wang has captured her spirit and influence in this new documentary about a 2011 banquet she made at his house (guests included Alice Waters and Ruth Reichl).

The doc, Soul of a Banquet, has made its rounds on the festival circuit and is coming to select theaters Oct. 21. Here's a taste:

The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
