Last week the SF-Marin Food Bank held its annual
Hunger Challenge, an event in which the organization encourages local residents to live on $4.50 a day, or about the amount of money provided by SNAP (formerly known as food stamps).
I participated last year and was stuck by how difficult the challenge was — so much that I
wrote an essay about the experience for
SF Weekly that I'm happy to announce will appear in
Best Food Writing 2014, edited by Holly Hughes.
I'm in great company with several other Bay Area writers also included in the collection. Former SFoodie editor
John Birdsall (now with CHOW.com) has a piece in there. So do local food writers
Molly Watson (About.com, Serious Eats,
Edible SF) Sarah Henry (
Lettuce Eat Kale,
Edible SF), Irvin Lin (
Eat the Love), and Michael Procopio (
Food for the Thoughtless). Along with several dozen other amazing food writers from around the world.
Best Food Writing 2014 comes out Oct. 21, and you can pre-order your copy on
Powell's and
Amazon.
Big congrats and virtual cheers to everyone selected!
