The Week in Vegan: Fighting Stress, Struggling Sea World and Carrageenan

Posted By on Tue, Aug 26, 2014 at 4:00 PM

  • Is something holding you back from going full-on vegan? Are you ready to let it all go and jump in feet first? Here are some reasons you may be holding out and some ways that you can work around them. For instance, did you know that you should change one habit at a time? If it's cheese you're most concerned with, work up to it. Don't just give it all up at once or you're headed for (possible) disaster. (Also: Cheese is a category; don't try to give it up by type. We both know you don't even eat Camembert!)
  • Can you say carrageenan? No? Neither can I. Luckily, it's about to be removed from your soy milk so you won't ever have to learn how to pronounce this multisyllabic monstrosity. Why is it being given the old heave-ho? Well, it turns out that carrageenan, which is a thickener, has been correlated with stomach problems and ulcers. What? I drink soy milk to avoid gastrointestinal distress. Adios, carrageenan. We hardly knew ye, and that's okay.

  • Almond and peanut butters are getting recalled faster than you can open your mouth in terror. Check to see whether your favorite brand is on the "do not eat" list. Both Trader Joe's and Whole Foods are on the list. I know, I'm just as shocked as you are.

  • The price of makeup getting you down? I get it. Here are some cruelty-free options that cost less than $10 and won't make you break out in hives. (Probably.) (I hope.)

  • Things are not going well for Sea World, which means things might soon be getting better for the killer whales that are the park's main attraction. Aside from having to build new pools for Shamu and friends (just let them go!), California is also considering making the whole killer whale torture circus illegal.

  • Summer is officially over (well, not on the calendar, but you know what I mean). Use these stress-busting foods to make your transition back to school/work/whatever much easier on yourself and those around you.

  • It's Tuesday! How did you get out of bed today? Was it like this dog? Because this dog ... this dog is my spirit animal.

Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
