SFUSD students tell why Meatless Mondays should be a thing.
The South San Francisco Unified School District announced yesterday that they're joining the many in enforcing Meatless Mondays in their public schools. It's not rationing; the school district is just advocating "compassionate eating." Elementary and middle schools in the South City district will be feed students bean burritos, taco triangles, baby carrots, apples, and other foods of the like.
According to
NPR, the meat-free weekday was active in 29 countries and in over 100 U.S. schools in 2013. Some California school districts that have implemented Meatless Mondays are Oakland Unified, West Contra Costa Unified, Novato Unified, Mt. Diablo Unified,
San Diego Unified, and
L.A. Unified. ]
NPR also reports that restaurants have also taken to the movement, including some of Mario Batali's establishments.
SFUSD has yet to bring the movement to its schools but many are in support of it and have
started a petition to have it integrated into school's lunch rotations. But for now, they're sharing recipes for your own Meatless Mondays and asking students if they care for it on
Facebook.
