Citrus-Based Racism Leads Markets to Change Product Names

People of a certain age may remember back to a time when Brazil nuts were blithely called "n*gger toes." Now, or at least until recently, there was a lime that had a similar racial and religious slur in its name.

The Seattle Times recently reported that two local produce suppliers have taken action against the racial and religious slur of "kaffir" by removing it from product labels when referring to the specific lime leaves.

  • Hampton Creek's "Just Mayo" is everywhere and the company is targeting all shoppers (not just those who buy their groceries at Whole Foods) to keep the Clean Food movement going.
  • A vegan town? In Texas? This mayor is taking health-consciousness to the next level. (I don't know if "next level" is completely accurate but it makes things sound 100 times more awesome.) (And this mayor is awesome!)

Cupcakes vs. Frozen Yogurt: Which Trendy Dessert Will Flame Out First?

Last week the internet decided to interpret the announced closing of mediocre cupcake chain Crumbs Bake Shop to mean that our long national love affair with the cupcake had come to an end. While it's surprising that the cupcake trend has hung on as long as it has, it seems like a stretch to say the closing of the Crumbs franchise (which has since been acquired) is a sign of the endtimes for the dessert, especially with our high number of better-than-Crumbs local choices.

    Sub Pop recording artists 'clipping.' brought their brand of noise-driven experimental hip hop to the closing night of 2016's San Francisco Electronic Music Fest this past Sunday. The packed Brava Theater hosted an initially seated crowd that ended the night jumping and dancing against the front of the stage. The trio performed a set focused on their recently released Sci-Fi Horror concept album, 'Splendor & Misery', then delved into their dancier and more aggressive back catalogue, and recent single 'Wriggle'. Opening performances included local experimental electronic duo 'Tujurikkuja' and computer music artist 'Madalyn Merkey.'"
