Frying food in blazing hot oil almost always results in tastiness, and the tacos dorados at La Palma are no exception. Literally translating to "golden tacos," the tacos dorados are reminiscent of those at Jack-In-The-Box (don't judge -- they're deep-fried and delicious). The difference, of course, is that La Palma's tortillas are made in-house with fresh masa, and the tacos can be filled with your choice of real meat.
For a mere $4.99, you get three crispy fried tacos filled with your choice of potato, chicken, carnitas, chile verde, and chile Colorado. The tacos are topped with a cojita/cabbage slaw tossed in a bright and tangy red sauce, which works well to complement the richness of the tacos. And if you are really hungry, you can turn this into a full-on meal by adding rice and beans for $2.99. It's truly a solid lunch at a steal.
Chile Colorado is my filling of choice. Tender pieces of beef are stewed in a tomato chile sauce -- the edges crisp up nicely with the deep fry while the center maintains the wonderful texture that should come with slowly stewed meat over long periods of time. It's glorious.
Optional (but highly recommended) eating instructions: dip tacos in the salsa verde for that extra level of complexity/heat and then alternate with a bite of slaw for a cool, refreshing crunch.
