With residue from a messy water main break only blocks away, today might not have been the most auspicious day to reopen a business that was displaced by fire. But after an absence of two-and-a-half years since the massive conflagration at Haight and Fillmore, Three Twins Ice Cream has finally reopened. Now you can get some Dad's Cardamom and Madagascar Vanilla without tracking down Carl the Three Twins ice cream truck, or having to go to the grocery store (or to Marin).

Like most people, I dread the not-too-distant day when armies of weaponized drones perfect a totalized surveillance state, terrorizing the populace and raining fire from the sky in the name of safety. However, a judge recently OK'd low-flying drones, opening them up for more banal purposes -- namely food delivery. It's entirely legal, now that the National Transportation Safety Board has triumphed over the Federal Aviation Administration. Move over drone warfare. Now it's just drone fare.
National Pi Day (3.14) might have started as a nerdy holiday at the Exploratorium, but it's become embraced by bakers and sweets aficionados alike as a way to celebrate, well, pies.
As always since the shop has opened, Mission Pie is offering slices of sweet and savory pies for $3.14 (regular cost is $4). The shop is also teaming up with LuckyBolt to offer pie delivery on Friday. Order by 10 p.m. on Wednesday to make sure you get your order in for apple, pear-blueberry, Dutch apple, walnut, Shaker lemon, banana cream, or vegan spiced apple (all $22). Delivery cost varies depending on size of order and location. Call to order: 282-1500.
Tea has been making a "comeback" for years but it finally seems like it's on the verge of breaking out.
You've heard of so-called "third-wave coffee" -- the single-origin, pour-over, absurdly tasting-noted brew that you find at places like Blue Bottle, Four Barrel, Sightglass, and just about every coffee shop in town. Well, it's finally tea's turn to get the fancy treatment. We received a sample of Samovar's new "3rd wave" tea that it will be debuting at its new "handcrafted tea experience" (aka cafe) opening in May at 411 Valencia. The press release, which came in an envelope with a faux-wax seal, had phrases like "meticulously sourced craft tea" and "Samovar turns brewing tea into performance art while serving a few select teas from its carefully curated collection."
"Let's eat" is what Union Square Thai restaurant Kin Khao name translates into, and it really ought to have an exclamation point after it. As only the latest in a string of high-end or otherwise remarkable Thai and Thai-inflected restaurants opening lately, this 75-seat emporium of curries and noodles on the second floor of the Parc 55 Wyndham is well-positioned to become one of the best-known.
